Your watch keeps telling you your VO2 max went up. Your feed keeps telling you it’s the secret to living forever. And somewhere in between, you’re just trying to figure out if it actually matters for your training.
It’s a fair question. VO2 max has become one of those metrics – like sleep score or HRV – that’s escaped the lab and landed on everyone’s wrist, usually with more confidence than the science actually supports.
So we sat down with Dr. Philip Price, Omnia’s head of sport science, to cut through it. Not to tell you VO2 max is meaningless – it isn’t – but to put it in its proper place for anyone training across strength and endurance. Here’s what hybrid athletes actually need to know about VO2 max, and just as importantly, what you don’t.
What Is VO2 Max, Actually?
Strip away the acronym and VO2 max is simply this: your body’s maximum ability to take in oxygen through your lungs, move it into your bloodstream, and get it into working muscle.
It’s one of the classic pillars of endurance performance, sitting alongside two other, less Instagram-friendly metrics:
- Fractional utilisation of VO2 max – essentially, how much of that maximum oxygen capacity you can actually access before you hit a wall. Think of it as your threshold: the pace or output you can sustain before fatigue-causing byproducts build up faster than your body can clear them.
- Running economy – how efficiently you use oxygen at any given speed. Two athletes can have identical VO2 max numbers and completely different performance because one is simply more economical.
For events lasting longer than about an hour, sport scientists are increasingly pointing to a fourth factor too: durability – how well you hold onto your running economy and physiology as fatigue accumulates deep into a race. It’s a newer area of research, but it explains why some athletes fall apart in the back half of a long event while others barely slow down.
VO2 max is one piece of that puzzle. Not the whole picture – a piece.
Why VO2 Max Is Suddenly Everywhere
Two things collided to make VO2 max the metric of the moment.
First, wearables started estimating it from your GPS pace and heart rate data and putting a number on your wrist every single day. Second, a wave of headlines linked higher VO2 max scores to a longer life, and the conversation shifted from “performance metric” to “longevity biomarker” almost overnight.
Here’s the nuance that tends to get lost: those longevity studies are usually looking across the entire population – sedentary people, casual exercisers, and dedicated athletes all lumped together. Across that full spread, yes, a higher VO2 max tracks with better health outcomes. But once you isolate a group of people who already train consistently, that relationship flattens out fast.
In other words, VO2 max isn’t magic. It’s a decent proxy for “this person trains regularly and is generally healthy” – and that behaviour, not the number itself, is likely doing most of the work.
Does a Higher VO2 Max Actually Make You Faster?
Sometimes. Sometimes not.
Dr. Price puts it well: VO2 max is like the entry requirement to get into a good university. It gets you in the door. It doesn’t determine your final grade.
Once you’re training seriously, the athletes who separate themselves aren’t necessarily the ones with the highest VO2 max – they’re the ones with superior running economy, a well-developed threshold, and (for longer events) durability. Elite marathoners often reach their genetic VO2 max ceiling years before their peak performance. What keeps improving after that is economy: how efficiently they move at race pace.

Athletes who build a broad physiological base across multiple disciplines before specialising often arrive with excellent underlying qualities – strong hearts, efficient movement patterns, good aerobic capacity – without the repetitive-strain baggage that comes from hammering one movement pattern for years. VO2 max might already be high. The real gains come from sharpening everything around it.
Should You Trust the VO2 Max Number on Your Wrist?
Treat it as a trend, not a diagnosis.
Your watch is estimating VO2 max from pace and heart rate – it’s not measuring gas exchange in a lab. Whether the absolute number is precisely accurate is debatable. What’s more useful is the direction: if it’s trending up alongside consistent training, that’s a reasonable signal your engine is improving.
The mistake is chasing the number itself rather than the training that produces it. If you find yourself adding extra high-intensity sessions purely to nudge a wearable metric upward, you’ve flipped the relationship – and you’re one overtraining injury away from finding out why that’s a problem.
Is a Lab VO2 Max Test Worth It for Hybrid Athletes?
For most recreational hybrid athletes, a single lab test is mostly a curiosity purchase — a nice data point, not a training necessity.
Where lab testing earns its cost is repeat testing over time, with the same protocol, so you can genuinely compare results A and B and see what your training block actually did. Sport scientists generally recommend leaving at least 12–16 weeks between tests, since meaningful physiological adaptation simply doesn’t happen faster than that.
If you do test, use the results to set accurate heart rate and pace zones – not as a standalone score to obsess over. And remember that a treadmill in a lab, with no wind resistance and consistent footing, is a slightly artificial environment compared to race day.
What This Means for Your Hybrid Training
You don’t need to know your exact VO2 max to train it effectively. Well-structured hybrid programming – the kind that blends strength work with threshold and easy-effort endurance sessions — will move all three performance pillars (VO2 max, threshold, and economy) in the right direction without you ever staring at a lab printout.
A few practical takeaways:
- Don’t chase the metric – chase the training. Zone-based, structured sessions will improve your VO2 max as a byproduct, not a target.
- Prioritise consistency over intensity. If you’ve had time off training, the fastest way to improve VO2 max is simply to start training again – not to front-load high-intensity sessions.
- Running economy matters more than most people realise, especially as your training matures. This comes from mileage, strength work, and time under tension, not just harder intervals.
- For events over an hour, train durability too – your ability to hold form and efficiency late into a session, not just your fitness at the start of it.
- Let the number confirm your training, not define it. A rising VO2 max after a consistent block is a nice confirmation you’re on the right track. It’s not a verdict on how long you’ll live.
The Bottom Line
VO2 max is a real, useful piece of the endurance puzzle – but it’s one part of a much bigger picture that includes threshold, running economy, durability, strength, fuelling, and recovery. The internet will tell you it’s the most important number in your training. It isn’t.
